HAMLIN On Mothers Day 2013, BETTYE LOU YORK SHIRA 86 quietly left her family and friends with her loving husband by her side. Confident in her Lord, she peacefully closed her earthly eyes then opened her heavenly eyes to the mansion prepared just for her. Bettye was born May 9, 1927 in Hamlin to Tommie Ann Spivey and Marvin Tetric York, Sr.. After graduating from Hamlin High, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri for one year before returning to Hamlin. She then began teaching at Hamlin ISD during WWII with an emergency teachers certificate. She married Bill Shira at FBC in Hamlin on March 9, 1946. Eventually Bettye enrolled at Hardin Simmons University, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She continued to teach at Hamlin ISD Middle School until retirement.
Bettye was very active in the community where she was a charter member and past president of the Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and the Womans Literary Club, where she was known for giving very captivating book reviews. She was a charter member of the Lambda Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and longtime secretary and a coorganizer the Hamlin Homecoming. Bettye was also very active in the First Baptist Church. She was a member and past president of the WMU, a member of the Sanctuary Choir and Glory Singers, a member of YEEPIES, as well as a dedicated Sunday School teacher until she was eightyfive years old. Bettye loved reading, traveling in their RV and spending summers at Williams Creek Reservoir in Colorado. She was also a doting grandmother who went to every sporting event, recital, and UIL event in which her grandchildren were involved.
Bettye is preceded in death by her parents and her brother and sisterinlaw Marvin and Kathleen York. Bettye is survived by her husband, Bill Shira of Hamlin two sons and daughtersinlaw, Charlie and Terry Shira of Hamlin and Ken and Karon Shira of Abilene a daughter and soninlaw, Luann and Jim Slover of Paducah six grandchildren, Chas Shira, Allison Coil and husband Cody, Kacy Hunter and husband Kevin, Renea Terry and husband Chris, Amy Phipps and husband Brett, and William Slover five greatgrandchildren, Matthew, Pearson, Macy, Lincoln, Creyton and one on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bettye was an inspiration to all who knew her, and all who knew her were touched by her gracious Christ like spirit. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
