HAMLIN- ELMA REE (BREWER) CROWLEY, 85, died Friday, July 3, 2015, in Hamlin, after a short illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home chapel, with burial following at Hamlin Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2015, at the Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home chapel.
She was born February 25, 1930, to Ethel (Fry) Brewer and Elmer Brewer in Hamlin, Texas. She was a lifelong resident of Hamlin, the community she loved. Graduating from Hamlin High School in 1947, she attended Shannon Nursing School in San Angelo, where she worked part time as an elevator operator at the Cactus Hotel. She married Bobby Crowley in 1951. She worked as Dr. Doug Perrin's office nurse, and at Hamlin Hospital and especially enjoyed her work in obstetrics. She also served as school nurse for the Hamlin Schools, as well as working in nursing homes for several years. In 1971, she helped establish the first Community Action day care program and served as its director, a job she loved, until her retirement in 1991. She was named woman of the year in Hamlin in 1986 and coming home queen in 2007.
Ree's hobbies were round and square dancing, sewing, arts and crafts, and visiting with friends. She was a lifetime member of the Wagon Wheel Square Dancing Club and the Guys and Dolls Round Dance Club. She loved children and animals. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hamlin.
Elma Ree is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Crowley.
She is survived by her partner of ten years, Jerry Dan Crowley; her children Dianna Crowley and Joe Rivera of Sweetwater, Rick and Lauren Crowley of Rockwall, and Reeta (Crowley) Lamphere and Keri Carter of Princeton; step-children Peggy and Gary Ridley of Abilene and Aubrey and Pam Crowley of Sweetwater; grandchildren Heather and Stuart Houston of San Angelo, Alanna and Barrett Meltz of Abilene, Jeffrey and Rachel (Crowley) Bell of McKinney, Brittany Lamphere of Denton, Kayla Crowley of Rockwall, and Chase and Caleb Chapman of Princeton; great-grandchildren William DeForest, Christiana DeForest, Kailynn Crowley, Emily Houston, Clara Hartgrove, and Evelyn Meltz; one sister, Glenna Brewer Woods; numerous nieces and nephews; and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her partner, Jerry Dan.
