Eloise was born September 30, 1933, in Bird City, Kansas. Her birth mother passed away in 1943, being so young, Paul and Emma Gneiser adopted her in April 1944. She attended school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and spent her high school years and one year of college at St. Johns College in Winfield, Kansas. There, she met Kenneth Hertel, and they were married June 29, 1952. They had just celebrated 57 years together when he passed away on September 9, 2009.
Through the years, Eloise worked at Stamford Manufacturing Company in Stamford, Bill D. Davis Insurance Agency in Hamlin, and later at Dillard Insurance. She then went to work at the Abilene Supported Living Center in Abilene in November of 1996, where she started as a housekeeper, and spent the final four years as a sewing room helper before retiring in January of 2010. In her spare time, Eloise enjoyed reading, sightseeing, and spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She volunteered with the Hamlin Food Bank, and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Dwayne Hertel and wife Sandra, Gary Hertel and wife Michael, and Gail Slimp and husband Marshall. She is also survived by eight grandchildren Chad Hertel, Chase Hertel, Leah Sells, Shannon Myers, Jason Hertel, Logan Hertel, Kenny Slimp, and Bradley Slimp, two adopted grandchildren Dayna Lachance and JD Monette, five greatgrandchildren Brandon Myers, Jordan Bosco, Angelie Lachance, Julia Lachance, and Bryson Hertel plus one on the way, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews.
