Joyce Faye (Brown) Covington, 86, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Hamlin Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Hamlin. Burial follows at Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ.
Born May 16, 1929 in Thornton, Texas, Joyce was the daughter of the late Governor Irland Brown and Mary (Draden) Brown. She and her family moved to Hamlin, Texas in 1941. She began attending Oscar DePriest School in 1941, and there met the love of her life, James Franklin Covington, and graduated in 1946. She and James married on October 6, 1946 and were united for 67 years.
Joyce accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a faithful member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. She loved to attend Sunday School and expound on the word of God. Joyce loved to cook, sew, and was a wonderful homemaker. She loved history and enjoyed family photography. Joyce began her career at Hamlin Memorial Hospital in 1967 in the housekeeping department. She became supervisor of housekeeping during her tenure of 20 years.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, James, daughter Brenda Covington, special daughter, Veronica Chase, two brothers (G.B. Brown and James Brown), and five sisters (Janie, Maxine, Bessie, Emma J, and Frances Jean).
Joyce is survived by her children: sons Van Covington (Frances) of Tucson, Arizona, Jerry Covington (Veronica) of Grand Prairie, Rickey Covington of Delaware, and Delger Covington of Murrieta, California; daughters Sandra Ross (Jimmie) of Dallas, Peggy Covington Davis of Hamlin, Marilyn Scott (Nathan) of Dallas, Sherry Boyd (Andrew) of Hamlin, Tonya Covington of Cedar Hill, Starlet Covington of Surprise, Arizona; Special daughters Geneva Shelton Neal (Shawn) of North Carolina, and Monica Chase Roberts (Walter) of San Antonio; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
