He spent 12 years as a Lease Foreman in the oilfield for Western Production Co. before opening a gas station on South Central Ave. in Hamlin Texas for The Texas Company (Texaco). He operated the Texaco station for 20 years before retiring in 1982.

In 1966, he moved his membership from Neinda Baptist Church to First Baptist Church of Hamlin, Tx (later becoming a Deacon) and moved to Hamlin the following year. In his retirement, he delivered Meals on Wheels, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Neinda Cemetery Association, and served as caretaker of the Neinda Cemetery for 16 years.

He enjoyed watching basketball and baseball on TV, following the Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks closely, harvesting and shelling pecans for family and friends, and seeking to serve the community in any way he could.
