Born March 13, 1928, in Funston, Texas, Verlous was the son of Joseph Lee and Mattie Bell (Long) Smart. He married Evelyn Perry on July 28, 1950, in Hamlin. He worked as a welder for Fiver Star Welding in Denver City for many years, where he invented a tool for use in the oil field. In his spare time, he enjoyed working with his hands as a Jack-of-all-trades. He was a longtime member of the Assemblies of God, and helped to build the Assembly of God Church in Denver City.
Verlous is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mattie Smart; three brothers, Robert Smart, Delbert Smart, and Carl Smart; one sister, Pauline Smith; and one great- granddaughter, Jordan Osborne.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Evelyn Smart of Hamlin; three sons, Danny D. Smart (Norma Joy), Garry Smart, and Lynn Smart (Gloria); four sisters, Neoma Bailey, Lorene Dowell, Lucille Carter (Bill), and LaVerne Glass (Butch); nine grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; special friend of the family Melissa Werner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
